Chambers, John T.
John T. Chambers, born near Olympia, Washington, on March 16, 1862, came from a family with a deeply rooted pioneer history on the Pacific Coast. His father, Thomas Jackson Chambers, was a Tennessee native who famously captained a large emigrant wagon train across the plains in 1845, eventually helping establish settlements at Chambers Prairie, Washington, before mining in California and serving in the Indian War. John was raised on Chambers Prairie and educated in Yakima, where he assisted his father with stock raising. Seeking his own fortune, John moved to California in 1879 at the age of seventeen, initially working on a ranch near Sutterville and mining for gold on the San Joaquin River.
By 1880, John settled in Fresno County, where he hauled freight to Pine Ridge, drove a ten-horse team over the mountains, and eventually established a permanent career in the cattle business. He acquired 160 acres of grazing land near Sycamore, managing a herd of about 400 cattle and serving the community for two years as a constable at Academy. In 1884, he married Jane Elizabeth Perry, a Fresno County native whose father, Peter Perry, had also captained a wagon train safely across the plains to settle on the Kings River. The couple made their home in Fresno in 1914, raising seven surviving children named Wayne, Eleanor, Nellie, Annie Laurie, Belle Elizabeth, Ella, and John, Jr.
