Cearley, C. T.
C. T. Cearley, born in Alameda County on November 21, 1865, was a prominent businessman and dedicated citizen who spent most of his boyhood in San Jose. As a young man entering professional life, he focused his career on newspaper work with the San Jose Times, where he eventually purchased and held a one-third interest for four years. He disposed of this interest and removed to Fresno in September 1891 to serve as an agent for San Francisco papers. Recognizing the brilliant prospects of the region, he used keen business discernment to establish a small stationery store in the heart of the California raisin industry. The business prospered rapidly and was incorporated in 1906 under the name of C. T. Cearley, Inc.
The firm built up a large and growing business in books and stationery, with its most important branch consisting of wholesaling paper and paper bags to a broad patronage. As the enterprise expanded to twelve employees, Mr. Cearley also dedicated his efforts to community involvement and civic service. President Wilson appointed him as a member of the exemption board for Fresno City, a role he served with notable ardor and zeal. He also served as the city director for the Fourth and Fifth Liberty Loan Drives. Beyond his civic duties, he took an active part in Masonic affairs as a Past High Priest of Fresno Chapter, Past Commander of Fresno Commandery, and prominent Shriner, while also maintaining membership in the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.
