Cauble, Emery E.
Emery E. Cauble, born in Washington County, Indiana, on December 1, 1873, was an industrious Hoosier pioneer who contributed significantly to the horticultural and viticultural growth of Fresno County, California. The youngest of seven children born to Alexander Cauble, a Union Army veteran, and Susanna Morris, he grew up on a farm and completed both public and private schooling before finishing a commercial course. He initially operated a prominent photography and jewelry business in Campbellsburg, Indiana, for four years before relocating to the Pacific Coast in 1903. After arriving in California, he explored local industries by working in lumbering and selling nursery stock around Kerman while studying Central California agricultural conditions.
Cauble ultimately purchased a forty-acre property on Dakota Avenue, installing a pumping plant and making extensive improvements to establish a thriving farm. He dedicated his land to raising alfalfa, maintaining fifty bee colonies, and growing specialized fruits including Thompson seedless grapes alongside Muir, Lowell, and Elberta peaches. Deeply embedded in the local community, he and his wife, Eva J. Cummings, whom he married in 1910, helped organize the Beulah United Brethren Church at Vinland. Furthermore, he was a stockholder in the California Peach Growers, Inc. and the California Associated Raisin Company, eventually earning the distinction of serving as the Fresno County crop reporter for the United States Government.
