Carling, Hugh James, Jr.
Hugh James Carling, Jr., born in Dayton, Lyon County, Nevada, on September 7, 1886, was the son of Hugh James Carling and Nancy Jane Newman Carling. His family relocated to Fresno, California, in 1892, where he spent his youth and completed his grammar and high school education. After finishing his schooling, he initially worked as a reporter for the Fresno Republican and engaged in various clerical roles before entering public service. In 1910, he joined the county recorder office as a deputy, and a year later, he began reading law independently and under the guidance of Carl E. Lindsay. His dedication to the legal profession culminated in his admission to the bar in San Francisco in October, 1916.
Following seven years in the county recorder office, Carling served as a clerk in department one of the Superior Court within the county clerk office. His legal career advanced further in February, 1918, when he was appointed deputy district attorney, a position he held with great credit to himself and Fresno County. Beyond his professional achievements, he was deeply involved in local fraternal organizations, holding membership in the Fresno Lodge Number 186, I. O. O. F., and serving as Chancellor Commander of the Fresno Lodge Number 138, K. of P. In his personal life, he married Elnora E. Elder, a native daughter of a Fresno County pioneer family. His career and community leadership reflect the meaningful civic contributions of early professionals in the development of the region.
