Camino, Juan
Juan Camino, born in Northern Spain on December 25, 1857, was an early settler and prominent sheepman who contributed to the pastoral development of Fresno County, California. He grew up herding sheep on his family farm before immigrating to America in 1881 and arriving in Fresno with limited funds. After working four years as a sheep herder, he used his savings to buy a small flock and partner with his brother Domingo in 1885. Their operations expanded significantly over the years, with the brothers managing up to 7,000 sheep and some cattle across Fresno, Mono, and Inyo counties. Following his brother departure back to Spain, Juan continued running the business independently until his retirement in 1904.
As a self-made man, Mr. Camino acquired substantial real estate holdings throughout Fresno County, including 1,500 acres of grazing land near Coalinga and a five-acre peach orchard north of Fresno. In 1895, he married Grace Etchegoin, a native of France, and together they raised four children named Marie, Raymond, Micaela, and Mary Jane. Beyond his successful agricultural pursuits, he became a well-known and influential member of the local Catholic Church. His journey from an old-world herder to a wealthy California property owner exemplifies the vital role early immigrant stock-raisers played in shaping the economic foundations of the region.
