Cain, J. R.
J. R. Cain, born in Indiana in 1874, was a successful merchant and public servant who became a prominent figure in the business and civic life of Fresno County, California. Reared and educated in Kansas following his family relocation there in 1881, he eventually migrated west to Sonoma County in 1900 before settling permanently in Fresno County in 1902. He built a prosperous career in the furniture and undertaking industry, operating a successful business in Selma for twelve years and later expanding into Sanger. His business acumen was matched by his dedication to public service, earning him an election to the Selma city council and an appointment as a deputy coroner of Fresno County in 1916.
Beyond his commercial and civic achievements, Mr. Cain was deeply involved in community and religious organizations, serving as a Sunday school superintendent and as the 1918 president of the Fresno County Sunday School Association. He was also an active fraternal member affiliated with the Sanger Lodge, No. 316, F. and A. M. In his personal life, he married Birdella M. Howard in 1889, and together they raised their daughter Alta Marie alongside their foster daughter Joybelle within the Methodist Episcopal Church. His life and career in Fresno County demonstrate the vital role that courteous, dedicated local entrepreneurs and civic leaders played in establishing thriving community institutions during the early twentieth century.
