Cadwallader, John Hollister
John Hollister Cadwallader, born in Iowa on February 8, 1853, was an enterprising viticulturist and agriculturalist who came from a historic family originally rooted in Wales and England. He moved to California with his widowed mother in April 1873, eventually working on grain ranches where he mastered the San Joaquin Valley method of farming with large teams. Driven by immense energy and perseverance, he began leasing land in 1880 and rapidly expanded his grain operations to cover about 1,500 acres. By 1899, he purchased a forty-acre plot in the center of the Garfield district, developing it into the highly productive Garfield Vineyard with muscats, figs, and peaches. Throughout his career, he successfully set out and improved at least 180 acres of vineyards and orchards, cementing his reputation as an expert in intensive farming.
Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Cadwallader emerged as an influential civic leader and a dedicated builder of local community infrastructure. He served as a trustee of the Clovis Union High School for twenty years, held the presidency of the Farmers Telephone System from its organization in 1905, and served as a director for the First National Bank in Clovis. His personal life included his first marriage to Belle Heiskell, with whom he had a son named Thomas, and his second marriage to Annie Ambrosia, who bore him two children named Maude and Ward. As a committed member of the Presbyterian Church and an active Republican County Committee participant, his extensive public service helped transform the region from a simple stock-range into a thriving center of cultivation.
