Butler, Thomas Edward
T. E. Butler, born in Wayne County, Illinois, on April 5, 1886, became a prominent and highly successful fruit-grower in Fresno County, California. Reared and educated in his native state, he learned the foundational details of farming before migrating to California in 1906. He initially settled in Dinuba and spent nine years working on various ranches for F. H. Wilson of Tulare County, gradually mastering the complexities of horticulture and viticulture. His expertise was further shaped by a two-year period working under M. Pettit, whom Butler credited for generously sharing critical agricultural knowledge with him.
His superior skills and practical experience eventually led to high-level managerial positions overseeing substantial agricultural properties. He first took charge of a 160-acre property in Barstow Colony devoted to vines and figs, and on May 15, 1919, he became the manager of the 180-acre Hopper Ranch at Parlier. In this responsible role, he supervised up to 100 employees during peak harvest seasons to maintain extensive peach and apricot orchards. Personally, he was married to Illinois native Ethel Scott in 1905, and together they raised two sons, Roy and Earl.
