Butcher, Homer E.
Homer E. Butcher, born on a Minnesota farm on February 28, 1882, developed a strong foundation in business education before establishing his professional career. After completing his commercial and stenographic studies at Toland Business College, he briefly taught there before cofounding and operating the Oelwein Business University for two years. He arrived in Fresno in June 1904, entering the local packing industry through office and sales positions at the Fresno Home Packing Company and the J. K. Armsby Company. His career advanced significantly in 1913 when he joined the Guggenhime Company, eventually serving as the auditor for all of their plants across the San Joaquin Valley.
Beyond his corporate auditing career, Mr. Butcher contributed to the physical growth of Fresno through real estate development. He purchased and subdivided a five acre area in North Fresno known as the Wapella Tract, selling the individual lots to local residents. He was also an active participant in community life, holding every leadership position within the Woodmen of the World fraternal order. He was married to Ethel Davison, a native of Minnesota, and together they raised one daughter, Wilma, who attended high school in Fresno.
