Burns, James E.
James E. Burns, born in Wellsburg, West Virginia, on May 29, 1843, was a distinguished Civil War veteran who dedicated much of his life to public service. He enlisted in Company A, Thirty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, on August 18, 1861, participating in major conflicts such as the battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Nashville without ever being wounded or captured. Following his military service, he held various public offices, working as a deputy county clerk in Missouri and later as a deputy clerk, treasurer, and registrar of deeds in Kansas. In 1889, he joined the land rush in Oklahoma, where he secured a 160-acre claim in Kingfisher County, served as city clerk, and was repeatedly elected county clerk on the Republican ticket. He eventually relocated to Fresno on November 1, 1905, where he managed a 20-acre ranch near Kerman for twelve years before retiring.
Beyond his career in civic administration, Burns was deeply involved in fraternal organizations, attaining high honors in Masonry and serving as Department Commander of the Oklahoma Grand Army of the Republic Post. His wife, Sarah A. Duff, whom he married on September 7, 1865, was similarly prominent as a past president and patriotic instructor for the Ladies of the G.A.R. Together they raised their children, Rhoda, Peter R., Sarah E., James A., and Elgie L., while actively participating in local community and church life. The couple spent their later years supporting local veteran initiatives in Fresno, where James served as adjutant of the Atlanta Post No. 92 and Sarah contributed to the Presbyterian Church. Their shared devotion to community preservation and veteran advocacy left a lasting historical impact on every region they inhabited.
