Burnett, John Henry
John Henry Burnett, born in Cornwall, England, on December 10, 1859, emerged as an esteemed citizen and a prominent manufacturing leader in California as the owner of the Burnett Iron Works. Coming from a generational line of iron moulders and foundrymen, he spent the most active years of his life building the largest foundry and structural steel plant in the San Joaquin Valley. He established a grand residence in 1898 at Ninth and Mono, developing a property that eventually encompassed an entire city block. His business triumphs and deep familiarity with the region solidified his reputation as one of the true upbuilders of Fresno County.
In his personal life, Mr. Burnett was married to a well-educated native of Fresno County who actively participated in the Fresno County Pioneer Society. The couple became the parents of two daughters, Maude E. and Winnifred, the latter of whom tragically passed away at the age of seven years. Beyond his industrial contributions, he was deeply involved in local community and fraternal circles, holding memberships in the Masons, Elks, Odd Fellows, and the Chamber of Commerce, while also serving as an officer of the Humane Society. A stanch Republican and an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing in the mountains, his life represents a legacy of civic dedication and lasting economic impact.
