Brown, William E.
William E. Brown, born in Washburn, Maine, on December 30, 1866, was an oil industry professional who descended from prominent early American families with Mayflower ancestry. He grew up in Maine attending public schools and working on a farm until the age of twenty-one, when he relocated to Michigan to spend six years as a foreman in lumber camps. In 1893, he moved to Indiana and entered the oil sector as a pumper in the Geneva field, beginning a dedicated career trajectory where he steadily rose to the position of driller and contract driller. Over the next two decades, his growing expertise took him to major oil fields across the Midwest, including locations in Beaver Dam, Ohio, and the Casey and Bridgeport districts of Illinois.
In 1910, Mr. Brown moved to California and joined the Claremont Oil Company in the Kern River field, an enterprise owned by the Union Oil Company. His leadership capabilities led to a transfer to Coalinga in December 1911, where he served as superintendent and ultimately advanced to district foreman overseeing the company holdings on the Clairmont, Iredell, and Union leases. His personal life was centered around his family, including his parents, Simon and Harriet Brown, who moved to Coalinga in 1910, and his wife, Emma Andrews, a former Michigan schoolteacher whom he married on January 3, 1901. Together they raised two children, Elva and Kenneth, while Mr. Brown maintained active community ties as a member of the Bridgeport Mason Lodge and the local Growlers Club of Coalinga.
