Brown, Thomas Headley
Thomas Headley Brown, born in Leicester, England, in 1885, was a thorough machinist and millwright who became a prominent figure in the industrial development of Coalinga, California. The son of George and Sarah (White) Brown, he graduated from the Wyggeston Boys’ School in 1906 before completing an engineering apprenticeship with F. J. Hill and Company. He gained vital technical expertise working for the Hunslet Locomotive Works in Leeds and spent four years as a millwright with the Coventry Ordnance Works. Drawn by the opportunities on the Pacific Coast, he resigned his position and immigrated to Coalinga in 1911 to join the Standard Oil Company Producing Department as a machinist.
His extensive training and experience quickly paid off when he was promoted to foreman of the machine shop for the Coalinga division just two years later. In his personal life, he married Kittie Allen in Leeds, England, and together they raised three children: Freda, who was born in England, and Audrey and Adrian, who were born in Coalinga. Dedicated to his community and personal values, he and his wife were active members of the Baptist Church. Politically, he aligned himself as a protectionist and a Republican, cementing his place as a patriotic and foundational citizen within the growing California industrial sector.
