Brown, Ambers
Judge Ambers Brown, born in Washington County, Iowa, on June 3, 1849, was the son of early pioneers James and Agnes Brown. He grew up on an Iowa farm before marrying Mary Pike and moving to Hamilton County, Nebraska, in 1875 to homestead eighty acres of land. After twelve years of farming prairie soil, he briefly returned to Iowa before migrating to Dos Palos, California, in 1891, where he managed a small ranch and served as a justice of the peace and school trustee. In 1910, he relocated to Tranquillity in Fresno County, where he successfully cleared raw, unimproved land to establish a productive dairy and livestock ranch.
His leadership in the community grew significantly when he was elected justice of the peace of the First Judicial Township of Fresno County in 1914, leading him to move into the town of Tranquillity. Judge Brown earned re-election in 1918 due to his impartial and satisfactory service, and he also worked as a notary public and grain-buyer for the Gen. M. W. Muller Company. He and his wife, who raised two sons named Dennis V. and Robert E., were instrumental in organizing the local Church of Christ congregation and building its house of worship. His legal career, church leadership, and dedication to municipal growth solidified his historical importance as an esteemed civic figure in Fresno County.
