Bromark, John F.
John F. Bromark, born in Dannemora, Sweden, on January 2, 1859, was an exceptionally talented fresco artist and a prominent contracting painter who became an influential citizen of Kingsburg, California. He immigrated to America with his family in 1870, living briefly in Florida before moving to Chicago, where he learned carriage painting and completed a portrait course at the Chicago Art Institute. While his early skill allowed him to paint prominent Chicago figures, he ultimately found greater success spending fifteen years working as a master fresco painter and high-class decorator. After a ten-year period operating a successful contracting paint business in Swea City, Iowa, he relocated to California in 1903 to expand his professional and agricultural pursuits.
In Kingsburg, Mr. Bromark bought and transformed an unimproved twenty-acre plot into a profitable vineyard and orchard before building a beautiful residence in 1913. Beyond his business success, he achieved artistic renown for notable paintings like the Gypsy Girl and the Colonial Dame, alongside numerous regional landscapes. He also became a vital civic leader, serving as a city trustee starting in 1917 and contributing directly to local education as a member of the Grammar School Board. A dedicated deacon of the Swedish Baptist Church, he raised five children—Lillian, Violet, La Rose, Rupert, and Carl—with his wife, Svea Swallander, who passed away in 1912.
