Brocks, Gustaf Henry
Gustav Henry Brocks, born in Westphalia, Germany, on February 26, 1875, was a dedicated horticulturist who came to California in September 1892. As the only son of Henry Brocks and Hermina Kruse, he was educated in German schools until the age of seventeen before migrating to the Pacific Coast. Upon arriving in Fresno County, he quickly found employment in a local vineyard to establish his footing in the agricultural industry. Through frugality and hard work, he made his first purchase of twenty acres in Eggers Colony when he was just twenty years old. His well-kept ranch on National Avenue stood as a clear testament to his initial enterprise and lifelong thrift.
His deep belief in the possibilities of the soil led him to become an original member of the first cooperative California Raisin Growers Association, which later became the California Associated Raisin Company. He also extended his community and business involvement by joining the Melvin Grape Growers Association to support intensive regional farming. In his personal life, he married Martha Werner in Fresno, a native of Germany who had moved to America with her parents. The couple was blessed with four children, three of whom survived to attend the local public schools: Gertrude, Henry, and Edith. His successful career as a progressive rancher highlights his historical significance as an early settler who helped build Fresno County’s foundational grape and raisin industries.
