Brix, Herman H.
Herman H. Brix, born in Silesia, Germany, on February 16, 1862, was an educated military academy graduate who became a highly successful pioneer developer in Fresno County, California. After arriving in the United States in 1882, he pursued farming near Hanford and ran a mercantile business in Huron before homesteading and farming wheat in Coalinga for eight years. Discouraged by low wheat prices, he traveled to the Alaska gold fields in 1898 and accumulated thirteen thousand dollars in Dawson City. He returned to California in 1901 upon hearing news of oil discoveries, initially working in the oil fields to gain firsthand knowledge of the industry. His early journeys and versatile pursuits highlight the grit of early entrepreneurs who helped shape the economic landscapes of the San Joaquin Valley.
Upon returning, Mr. Brix built a massive fortune by supplying water to local oil wells and investing heavily in strategic oil lands across the Coalinga district. He organized the B. and B. Oil Company on his homestead and held major stakes in the Confidence Oil Company, the St. Paul and Fresno Oil Company, and the Coalinga Syndicate. In the city of Fresno, his building achievements included superintending the construction of the Fresno Hotel and erecting the modern Brix Apartments. He was an independent voter, a member of various Masonic bodies, and a believer in Christian Science in his later years. Following his death on September 20, 1915, his capable wife, Helene Schemel, with whom he raised three children named Emma M., Karl H., and Theodore Frederick, assumed management of his valuable estate.
