Briscoe, R. W.
R. W. Briscoe, born in Lewis County, Missouri, in 1863, was an energetic and resilient fruit-grower and rancher who became a prominent figure in Fresno County, California. After attending a graded private academy at Gilead, Missouri, he moved west with his family in 1886 and initially purchased forty acres near Malaga to plant vines, trees, and alfalfa. In 1888, he married Elizabeth Caroline Mugg, a college-educated descendant of Daniel Boone, and the couple settled in Fresno County to build their life together. Despite losing his early possessions during a severe financial panic in the early nineties, Briscoe used immense grit and determination to rebuild his career from scratch.
Through tireless industry, Briscoe expanded his holdings to encompass 1,100 acres across various localities, including major vineyards and a large stock ranch near Sanger. He became a highly progressive agriculturist, utilizing advanced tractors to cultivate hundreds of acres of vineyards and actively participating in the Raisin Growers Association. Alongside W. R. Nutting, he secured the first one hundred members for the Raisin Growers Exchange, laying the vital foundation for the California Raisin Growers Association. Deeply dedicated to education and his community, Briscoe served on the election board for fifteen years and raised seven children—Ernest, Elmer, Walter, James, Roy, Beryl, and Fred—leaving a lasting historical and economic legacy in the San Joaquin Valley.
