Bretz, Joseph S.
Joseph S. Bretz, a native of Pennsylvania, was an early settler of Fresno County who arrived in the spring of 1875 and initially worked at Clipper Mills. He soon expanded into manufacturing shakes and eventually established a shingle mill on Pine Ridge, contributing to the early development of the regional lumber industry. On April 29, 1886, he married Margaret Ellen Lepley in Hardin County, Iowa, before permanently settling back in Fresno County to expand his business operations. He established Bretz Mill one mile east of Ockenden and purchased a ranch near Tollhouse, where he lived until his death on October 25, 1911.
Following his passing, his sons Edward and Frank continued running Bretz Mill, which became one of the oldest operating mills on Pine Ridge. The family expanded their enterprise to manage 1,160 acres of timber, actively advocating for government-enforced reforestation by leaving seed trees. The brothers also served their communities as school trustees in the Pleasant Vale and Pine Ridge districts while maintaining membership in the Woodmen of the World. Alongside their sisters, Estella and Lulu, the children carried on the family legacy in Fresno County, where their mother, Margaret Ellen Bretz, remained as one of the oldest settlers on Pine Ridge.
