Bordagaray, Dominique
Dominique Bordagaray, born in France on January 15, 1876, was a college-educated immigrant who became a highly successful farmer and businessman among the old settlers on the West Side of Fresno County. Drawn by the state opportunities, he arrived in Los Angeles in December 1893 with financial assistance from his grandmother and permanently transitioned to Fresno County in 1895. He initially worked for local sheep-growers, spent nearly two years in the Millwood Basin mountains, and diligently mastered the English language to further his professional advancement. From 1900 to 1902, he managed the Pyrenees Hotel at Kern and O Streets in Fresno, allowing him to save the initial capital necessary to establish his own independent livestock operations.
Bordagaray grew his initial savings into a massive sheep-raising enterprise on the West Side, introducing the first modern sheep-clippers to his shearing camp at Turk and managing over 110,000 sheep in a single spring season. He successfully expanded into real estate and commerce, homesteading and improving 140 acres eleven miles east of Coalinga, developing store buildings on C Street, and later establishing a confectionery and billiard business on Fifth Street under the firm name of Bordagaray and Cain. An active and patriotic community member, he became an American citizen in 1912, joined the Eagles fraternity, and raised six children named Albert D., Grace S., Rose E., Stanley, Isabel I., and John Henry with his wife, Miss Louisa Devaurs. His diverse business ventures and agricultural triumphs solidified his significance as an enterprising pioneer who actively shaped the economic development of Fresno County.
