Blair, Jerome
Jerome Blair, born in Monroe County, Indiana, in 1853, was the son of a prominent Civil War veteran and portrait artist of Scotch ancestry. After marrying Sallie Thrasher in 1872, he migrated to the Pacific Northwest, where he worked in harvest fields, homesteaded acreage in Washington, and operated a mining boarding house in British Columbia. Driven by financial hardship, he relocated his family to Riverdale, California, on Christmas Day in 1900 with only a single dollar to his name. His arrival marked the beginning of a long struggle against limited means as he sought to establish a new life in the West.
Through determination and the crucial assistance of local land agents, Blair successfully leased and farmed hundreds of acres of land near Laton, eventually turning his ranch into a regional show place. He expanded his operations into a partnership with his minor sons, transitioning from wheat hauling to purchasing a fine forty-acre ranch in the heart of the Laguna de Tache Grant where he raised Percheron horses and poultry. His family line connected back to historical figures, including a signer of the Declaration of Independence through his wife lineage. His ultimate success stands as a testament to the perseverance of early Fresno County agriculturalists who overcame deep poverty to build enduring community roots.
