Berryhill, F. A.
F. A. Berryhill, born in Arkansas in 1847 and raised in Missouri, was an experienced and influential rancher who left a lasting mark on Central California. After serving in the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War and working for years as a blacksmith, he ran general merchandise stores in Missouri and Arkansas. He migrated west to California with his family in 1885, starting with very little and working on rented farms near Selma and Sanger for nearly two decades. His early life of resilience and adaptability prepared him well for the agricultural opportunities of the expanding Western frontier.
In the early twentieth century, Berryhill achieved significant success by planting a large, profitable vineyard in Dinuba and later managing a major subdivision project near Roeding Park in Fresno. He eventually established a thriving 125 acre alfalfa ranch near Lanare along the rich river bottom of the Kings River, where he resided with his wife, Emma Merritt, and partnered with his sons. As a dedicated Democrat and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, his community presence was bolstered by his family connections, including a son who served in the Aero Squadron. His diverse career as a tradesman, merchant, and agriculturist exemplifies the vital role early ranchers played in building California communities.
