Berry, Arthur
Arthur Berry, born in Yorkshire, England, was the son of a textile manufacturer from an old English family. After receiving a private school education and completing a three-year business apprenticeship with a land agent, he decided to seek new opportunities abroad. In 1905, he immigrated to California to join his brother and soon secured a position as a bookkeeper for the California Wine Association in Fresno County. This early experience in local commerce laid the foundation for his deep understanding of the region agricultural business.
Partnering with his brother Thomas, Arthur transitioned into independent ranch management by successfully developing and selling improved agricultural land in Modesto. The brothers later returned to Fresno County to establish a prosperous sixty-five acre fruit and alfalfa ranch at Lane Bridge. Arthur further demonstrated his progressive approach to local industry through his active involvement with the California Peach Growers, Inc. His dedication to honest labor and community collaboration established the Berry name as a respected entity in California’s expanding agricultural landscape.
