Berndt, Erich
Erich Berndt, popularly known as Harry, was born in Chicago in 1886 and grew up attending the public schools of the metropolis. Beginning to shift for himself at just thirteen years old, he spent over fifteen years working various jobs across the Middle West to gain invaluable life experience. Drawn west by the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1914, he toured California and immediately recognized the immense potential of the region. He decided to settle permanently in Fresno County, establishing a foundation for his future enterprise in the West.
As a rising real estate man, Berndt purchased and subdivided land in Sanger to create the highly successful Berndt Tract. He formed The Action Realty Company, orchestrating historic, record-breaking agricultural property sales that boosted local land values and community confidence. Beyond his business acumen, he was an enthusiastic advocate for union labor, frequently serving on executive boards and organizing uplifting events for local workers. Married to Rosie Greenewald of Chicago and active in several fraternal organizations, his energetic leadership left a lasting mark on California’s developing economic landscape.
