Bering, Peter
Peter Bering, born in Denmark on October 8, 1871, was a skilled farmer and a descendant of the distinguished Danish navigator Vitus Bering. Raised on a farm by his father, Henry Bering, he received a public school education and completed a practical agricultural apprenticeship before serving a year in the Danish Army. He worked in a factory receiving department for eight years before deciding to move to the Pacific Coast, arriving in Fresno County on June 14, 1903. His early years in California included farming and working as a carpenter in Rolinda, where he eventually developed a successful thirty-acre vineyard and alfalfa property.
In 1916, Peter sold his original land at a good profit and relocated to Eggers Colony to establish a new twenty-acre vineyard. He expanded his agricultural operations by leasing an additional twenty acres, cultivating multiple grape varieties and joining both the California Associated Raisin Company and the Melvin Grape Growers Association. He and his wife, Caroline Hansen, raised four children named Henry, Vitus, Marie, and Clara, with his sons actively assisting him in his viticulture business. Active in his community, Peter served two terms as president of the Danish Brotherhood lodge and consistently supported local initiatives aimed at the public welfare.
