Bergthold, Henry
Henry Bergthold, born in Minnesota in 1883, was a highly esteemed Fresno County rancher who became a prominent figure in California viticulture and horticulture. The son of Austrian immigrants who settled in Minnesota before migrating west, he moved with his family to Reedley in 1904. He dedicated himself to agricultural pursuits in the region, establishing a permanent residence on his attractive twenty acre ranch in 1913 where he later built a beautiful home. His life represents the experiences of early twentieth century settlers whose dedication to farming helped shape the local communities of the San Joaquin Valley.
On his productive property, Henry employed up-to-date and scientific methods to successfully cultivate prunes as well as Sultana and raisin grapes. Beyond his ranching achievements, he was a versatile citizen who contributed to his community by working in local stores and assisting at the post office when needed. He was deeply connected to local industry and community life through his active membership in both the Raisin and Peach Growers associations and the First Mennonite Church of Reedley. Together with his wife Marie Muller, with whom he shared four children, Henry built a meaningful legacy rooted in the agricultural development of Fresno County.
