Berg, William H.
William H. Berg, born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, in 1877, was a well known citizen of the Dakota Colony who contributed significantly to the early development of Fresno County, California. The son of German immigrants, he spent his youth moving farther westward to Washington and Oregon, where he attended Whitman College before entering the business world. After working in the grocery industry in Portland, he trained as an electrician and applied his skills at the Bremerton Navy Yard. His diverse early experiences prepared him well for a successful career when he finally relocated to California in 1913.
Upon arriving in Fresno County, William established himself as a successful viticulturist by purchasing and improving a twenty-acre ranch with Thompson seedless grapes. His technical expertise led to his appointment managing the lines and central office for the Kerman Telephone Company, where his efficiency provided highly satisfactory service to the community. He continued to expand his local roots by marrying Minnesota native Ellen B. Nelson in 1917 and purchasing additional acreage for Emperor grapes a few years later. His life and local involvement highlight the vital role of skilled, multi-talented individuals in building California agricultural and technological communities during the early twentieth century.
