Benadom, William O.
Benadom, William O.
William O. Benadom, born in Johnson County, Nebraska, in 1863, was one of the oldest settlers and pioneer ranchers of Fresno County, California. He traveled to California in 1875 to join his father, Frank Benadom, and continued his schooling in Stanislaus and Merced counties. From his youth, he drove teams in grain fields and eventually helped manage forty-four head of horses on giant harvesters. In October 1882, he married Della Whealan, a talented former teacher who had attended St. Vincent’s Academy and taught at the San Luis School.
The couple began farming in the Mount Campbell district in 1883, where they purchased forty acres and established one of the first vineyards in that section. In 1899, they sold this farm and bought over 126 acres of undeveloped land from the Gray estate, which they transformed into a magnificent property irrigated by the Enterprise Canal. Their modern ranch featured sixteen acres of peaches and 103 acres of muscat, wine, malaga, and sultana grapes. Beyond his farming success, William served as a school trustee for the Frankwood and Gray Colony districts, and he actively supported the California Associated Raisin Company alongside his wife and their nine daughters.
