Beatty, Harry W.
Harry W. Beatty, born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1865, was a highly successful oil-well driller who spent his life working within the rapidly developing American oil industry. As the son of an oil man, he was introduced to the trade at a very early age, learning the business firsthand while growing up in the Pennsylvania oil fields. He began working as a pumper at just thirteen years old and later spent seven years as a tool dresser in the Bradford oil district. His early career also took him to Ohio and Indiana, where he spent several years drilling new wells and gaining valuable experience. This extensive training in the eastern oil fields prepared him for significant leadership roles when he eventually moved out west.
In 1900, Harry moved to California and began working for various prominent oil enterprises throughout Los Angeles, Whittier, and Coalinga. His expertise earned him the responsible position of driller-foreman for the California Oil Fields, Ltd., a role he maintained after the plant was acquired by the Shell Company in 1913. Beyond his professional achievements, he was an active member of the Oilfields Club, supported the Progressive Republican party, and married Minnie Johansen in 1907. His extensive career across multiple states highlights the vital role experienced oil professionals played in shaping the early industrial growth of California.
