Bazterra, George
George Bazterra, born in Spain on November 28, 1875, was a self-made entrepreneur and hotel proprietor who spent over twenty-five years contributing to the growth of California. Arriving in Los Angeles in January 1891 alongside his father, he began working on local ranches as a teenager to establish himself in the region. Despite early setbacks, including losing years of wages to an employer bankruptcy, his resilience led him north to Fresno County in 1898. There, he worked for prominent operations like Miller and Lux and managed large teams in the grain fields of Firebaugh. His early life represents the determined spirit of young European immigrants who helped develop the agricultural foundation of the San Joaquin Valley.
Upon returning to Fresno, George Bazterra transitioned into hospitality by becoming the proprietor of the Hotel Bascongado. He successfully balanced this enterprise with a lucrative sheep-running venture on leased land before focusing entirely on expanding his hotel interests. His community involvement deepened alongside his wife, Mary Helena Ansolabehere, through active participation in local social organizations such as the Druids and the Eagles. Known for cultivating a welcoming household, he earned the widespread goodwill of area residents through his warmth and business presence. His career highlights the significant impact of immigrant business owners in shaping the social fabric and commerce of early Fresno.
