Basey, Harry Clyde
Harry C. Basey, born near Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1880, was a skilled viticulturist and horticulturist who eventually built a life in the American West. Raised from early childhood in Nebraska, he received his education in the public schools before beginning work on local farms at twenty years of age. Following his marriage to Garnett Norwood in 1904, he engaged in farming across Nebraska and Missouri, often collaborating with his father-in-law, John Norwood. His early life and geographic transitions mirror the patterns of many Midwestern agrarian families seeking growth and new opportunities in different regions during this era.
In 1912, Basey relocated to Fresno County, California, where he purchased an unimproved thirty-acre tract in the Round Mountain District. Through diligent care, he successfully transformed the land into a beautiful, well-improved ranch dedicated to white Adriatic figs and Thompson seedless grapes. Beyond his agricultural achievements, he was deeply involved in his community, serving as a member of the Board of Deacons at the Christian Church in Sanger. Supported by a deep family lineage and shared labor with his relatives, his career highlights the vital role of dedicated farmers in developing California’s rich agricultural landscape.
