Barnett, William
William Barnett, born in Scotland in 1880, was a highly successful mechanic and electrician who achieved a prominent professional standing in Fresno County, California. After completing his education at Glenluce Academy, he briefly assisted with his father mercantile business before immigrating to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1903 to pursue electrical work. He relocated to California in 1904, settling in the community of Oilfields where he assumed responsibility for local electrical operations. His early arrival allowed him to witness and actively participate in the rapid infrastructural development of the regional oil industry.
As chief electrician for the Shell Company of California, William held one of the most responsible positions of its kind in the state. He built up the local lighting plant from its inception, successfully wiring the entire camp and installing all vital electrical connections. His professional success was matched by a deep connection to the community, where he was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Coalinga. Married to Catherine E. Fitzgibbons in San Francisco, his career and family presence alongside his brothers reflected the significant impact of skilled European immigrants on California industrial growth.
