Ball, Frank Hamilton
Frank Hamilton Ball, born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on September 13, 1855, was a highly versatile capitalist, rancher, and pioneer who contributed significantly to Fresno County, California. The son of Sydney Silas Ball and Amanda Nancy Wood, he completed his education at a military school and other institutions of higher learning in eastern New York before moving to California in 1876. After spending six years in San Francisco, he arrived in Fresno on August 7, 1882, where he established one of the first local drug stores in the Clark and McKenzie Building. His early commercial success allowed him to purchase land on I Street, build a two-story structure for his business, and eventually transition into influential real estate developments at the corner of Kern and I Streets.
After selling his early drug business, Mr. Ball acquired land southeast of the city and established the Ball Vineyard, which featured a beautiful palm drive and grew to be the largest and earliest vineyard in the valley. He later converted this vast property into a fruit orchard and expanded his diverse business ventures to include a wall-paper and paint store from 1905 to 1915. He married Bessie May Webb Hill on December 29, 1915, a refined woman who actively shared in his enterprise management up until his sudden death from heart failure. As a staunch Republican, an Odd Fellow, and a Woodman of the World, his immense historical significance was finalized through his will, which provided the largest public bequests ever distributed in Fresno to local relief societies, playgrounds, and community organizations.
