Baker, A. A.
Aaron Alphonso Baker, born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1867, descended from a historic English Quaker family and relocated to California with his parents in 1876. He completed his education in Shasta County and began his career as a bookkeeper before successfully operating his own general store from 1898 until 1904. Seeking new ventures, he relocated to Coalinga, where his family background in drilling and construction paved the way for his entry into the booming oil industry. His early life reflects the classic western pattern of relocation, commercial enterprise, and industrial adaptation.
In Coalinga, Baker partnered with his father and brothers to organize the Coalinga Western Oil Company, successfully drilling the field first producing well. He later managed a major 160 acre operation following a corporate consolidation and helped organize the Coalinga Petroleum Company alongside his brothers. Beyond his extensive industrial contributions, Baker was deeply involved in his community, serving as a local school trustee and participating in the Odd Fellows fraternal organization. Married to Bertha L. Neat and father to four children, his career highlights the vital role of family partnerships and industrial pioneers in shaping California natural resource history.
