Bader, Frederick
Frederick Bader was an enterprising business man and mechanical engineer who contributed valuably to the development of California infrastructure. After completing his engineering studies and working in St. Louis and Philadelphia, his profession took him abroad to perform engineering work in Galicia for the Bradford Oil Company. He moved west to Butte County, California, in 1885 to purchase land and assist with regional colonization before permanently relocating to Fresno County in 1889. In Fresno, he successfully developed a forty-acre vineyard near Fowler and briefly engaged in a mercantile business in Hanford.
His professional focus later expanded into the oil industry, where he operated as both a developer and well contractor in Coalinga and the Kern River field. Around this time, he incorporated the Worswick Street Paving Company, serving as its president and manager to oversee the construction of numerous bridges and over one hundred miles of paved streets and highways. This industrial leadership earned him an influential role within the local Chamber of Commerce and the Merchants Association. Married to Marie Markfelt in 1909, his successful career highlights the vital impact of skilled engineers on the physical and economic growth of early California.
