Bacon, Charles
Charles Bacon, born in Samsun, Turkey, on August 15, 1877, immigrated to the United States at age eleven and settled directly in Fresno, California. He completed his education through local public schools and the Sparrow Business College before working on a regional ranch for eight months. Seeking independence, he leased the 160 acre El Capitan Vineyard, managing a diverse agricultural operation focused heavily on Malaga and Muscat grapes. After several successful years of operation, he purchased the property and later sold a portion of it for a substantial profit.
Beyond managing his own land, Bacon expanded his commercial footprint by organizing both the Palagan Fruit Company and the Star Fruit Company. His extensive industry expertise eventually led to a successful tenure buying fruit for the Fresno Fruit Growers Company, a role that required extensive daily travel through the San Joaquin Valley. As a self made man, he consistently supported the growth and progress of local agricultural industries. The father of three children, Gorkin, Hig, and Zobel, his career closely mirrors the rapid development and economic expansion of early Fresno.
