Axt, Rudolf
Rudolph Axt, born in Russia in 1875, was a dedicated rancher and vineyardist who became a prominent figure in the Barstow Colony of Fresno County, California. Before arriving in America, he spent several years serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Russian army, stationed at Port Arthur, Harbin, and Vladivostok. Following his military service, he married Anna Schleiger in 1903 and briefly engaged in farming in his native land. In 1907, the young couple immigrated to the United States, initially settling in Kansas where he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railway.
In 1909, Rudolph moved his family to Fresno, where he gained local employment moving houses and working in the Santa Fe Railway roundhouse. He successfully transitioned into California agriculture in 1911 by purchasing a twenty-acre ranch in the Barstow Colony to cultivate alfalfa and Thompson seedless grapes. His business endeavors expanded further through local property investment, while his personal life was centered around raising his seven children. As an active teacher in the local Seventh Day Adventist Sunday school and a supporter of the Republican party, his life reflects the vital contributions of industrious immigrants to the community fabric of Fresno County.
