Augustine, Louis
Louis Augustine, born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1858, was raised on farms in Illinois and Missouri as part of a large family born to French immigrants. After receiving a public school education, he pursued agricultural opportunities across Carroll County, Arkansas, and the Indian Territory, where he engaged in stock raising. His adventurous spirit led him to participate in the historic run for a claim during the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma. Though he eventually returned to Arkansas to continue farming, his diverse experiences across multiple states prepared him for his eventual relocation to the Pacific coast.
In 1907, Louis migrated to California and soon settled in Coalinga to begin working in the rapidly growing oil fields. He successfully leased and operated the Coalinga Homestake before shifting his focus back to agriculture by purchasing a ranch on Los Gatos Creek. On this property, he established a thriving cattle raising business under his distinct L.A. combined brand. Recognized as an affable gentleman, a dedicated member of the Democratic party, and a popular figure in the Coalinga Lodge of Eagles, his life reflects the industrious spirit of the individuals who shaped early twentieth century California.
