Atkins, Oscar D.
Oscar D. Atkins, born in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1869, was a man of exceptional ability who became a leading figure in the building and contracting industry of Fresno County. He learned the carpenter trade in his native state and gained fifteen years of valuable experience in Indiana lumber yards and planing mills. Beginning his career as a contractor at the early age of nineteen, he developed a thorough understanding of all branches of building operations before relocating to California. In September 1912, he moved to Fresno and initially worked as a foreman before establishing his own prominent contracting business.
As the senior member of the highly successful firm Reese and Atkins, he contributed immensely to the architectural growth and beauty of the Fresno community. His firm erected over one hundred homes and apartments, including the notable Littlefield Apartments and numerous residences in the Alta Vista Tract, where he built his own modern home on Huntington Drive. Beyond residential construction, his company completed significant commercial projects such as store remodels, a brick storehouse, and essential carpenter work for the Fresno Fair Grounds. A devoted member of the First Methodist Church and father to two children from his first marriage, his successful efforts in building the local community left an enduring historical monument to his name.
