Arriet, Pedro
Pedro Arriet, born at Cilveti, Navarra, on May 13, 1864, was part of a generation of immigrant settlers whose perseverance shaped the agricultural landscape of Fresno County. The son of a French carpenter and a Spanish mother, his early life was centered around family farming, which limited his formal education. Driven by glowing reports of the Pacific Coast, he arrived in Fresno on May 4, 1886, and initially gained experience working for a local sheepman. His early journey exemplifies the determination of European immigrants who traveled west to build new lives.
In partnership with his brother Angel, Pedro successfully ran a sheep-raising operation near Huron and Coalinga for ten years before establishing his own 160 acre homestead on Cantua. He significantly improved the land, successfully cultivating grain and raising a large flock of well-bred sheep. His local influence expanded through his role as an original stockholder in the Growers National Bank of Fresno and his civic engagement as a firm Republican. Married to Agustina Yturri in 1903 and father to a daughter named Florencia, his legacy is defined by true Californian hospitality and business success.
