Armstrong, Robert Franklin
R. F. Armstrong, born in Madison County, Iowa, on April 6, 1870, was a pioneer settler of the Lone Star district who arrived in California in 1884 with his father, William Armstrong. He spent his early years farming grain near Fresno and Caruthers before dedicating himself to improving and planting his home ranch starting in 1891. Over the next two decades, he steadily expanded his agricultural holdings, purchasing multiple twenty acre tracts to grow Muscat raisins and young grapevines. His cooperative efforts with his family and his early agricultural ventures established him as a key figure in the development of the region.
Beyond his farming operations, Armstrong contributed to his community as a school district trustee and through active leadership in local initiatives like the Thrift Stamp Drive. He married Myrtle L. Doyle, the daughter of a prominent local editor, in 1902, and together they raised three children while she served as the Lone Star branch librarian. His local influence was further strengthened by his roles as a stockholder in both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. Armstrong life and diverse community roles exemplify the foundational impact of early settlers on the social and economic fabric of Fresno County.
