Arieta, Arthur
Arthur Arieta, born in Calabria, Italy, in 1876, was part of an immigrant family that journeyed to America in 1885, eventually settling in California after a brief period in New York. Arriving in Fresno County in 1888, he immediately began working on local ranches to build an independent livelihood. Through diligent labor, he accumulated the necessary resources and expertise to lease land and establish his own grain-growing operation. His early life reflects the classic perseverance of European immigrants who helped shape the foundational agricultural landscape of the region.
After marrying Mary Altro Sofia, whose own family history included early California pioneering, the couple purchased a twenty-acre ranch west of Fresno. They transformed this land into a highly successful alfalfa and dairying enterprise, with Arthur also becoming a stockholder in the Danish Creamery. Their blended family included four living children born of their marriage, alongside Mary children from her previous union, two of whom served in the United States Army during the war. Highly esteemed for his public-spirited nature and business enterprise, his legacy endures as a testament to the vital role of immigrant families in developing California farming communities.
