Ardohain, Martin
Martin Ardohain, born in France in 1876, was a resilient agriculturalist whose life illustrated the success that comes from perseverance and close application to business. Raised in a farming family in the Pyrénées region, he served in the French Army before immigrating to California in 1900 to seek new economic opportunities. Despite starting his new life deep in debt due to an immediate and costly illness, he spent four years working steadily to clear his financial obligations and build capital. His early determination reflects the shared experiences of many European immigrants who overcame initial hardships to establish themselves on the Pacific Coast.
In 1905, Martin partnered with his brothers to enter the livestock industry, eventually focusing on a highly successful sheep-raising partnership with his brother John. Over the years, he expanded his operations significantly, managing thousands of sheep across a 160-acre ranch near Huron and seasonal mountain leases. Beyond livestock, he engaged in grain raising and became an original stockholder in the Growers National Bank of Fresno, anchoring his influence in the local economy. Together with his wife, Marie Yrigaray, whom he married in 1910, and their two children, his journey underscores the lasting impact of dedicated entrepreneurs on the development of Fresno County.
