Anthony, William James
William J. Anthony, born at Napa Soda Springs in 1866, was a pioneering figure who contributed significantly to the early development of Fresno County, California. Raised in St. Helena, he worked on local farms before moving to Fresno in 1886 to gain experience in the regional vineyard industry. He eventually transitioned to large scale grain farming, successfully cultivating 3000 acres with business partners on the West Side until 1905. His early journey highlights the determination of nineteenth century individuals who helped establish the agricultural foundations of the region.
In 1907, Anthony relocated to Barstow, where he transformed a stubble field into a thriving 160 acre ranch featuring alfalfa, fruit orchards, vineyards, and a dairy operation. He played a central role in founding the town of Barstow by donating land for the local schoolhouse, the United Presbyterian Church, and Barstow Hall. Beyond his extensive community involvement as a school trustee and director of the Hall Association, he belonged to several major agricultural organizations and the Fraternal Brotherhood. Married to Rosa Moes in 1901 and a father of four daughters, his civic leadership and agricultural achievements left a lasting impact on the history of Fresno County.
