Anderson, Garrett E.
Garrett E. Anderson, born near Herodsburg, Kentucky, on January 3, 1873, was a prominent pioneer rancher who became deeply identified with the early development of Fresno County, California. He arrived in Fresno at the age of eleven and attended the Hawthorne School, which was the only school in the area at that time. He chose to stay in the region when his parents returned east, dedicating himself to viticulture and early labor in the mountains with local lumber companies. In July 1893, he married Elizabeth Rice, a native of Newark, New Jersey, who had also attended the Hawthorne School after her family relocated to Fresno in 1885.
The enterprising couple achieved significant agricultural success through continuous hard labor, frugality, and smart investments in local real estate. Starting with an initial twenty-acre purchase in 1898, Garrett expanded his holdings over the years to include a beautifully cultivated sixty-acre tract southeast of Clovis and a joint forty-acre vineyard with his father-in-law, James Rice. He successfully overcame early agricultural challenges like localized pests to establish high-yielding vineyards filled with muscat and shipping grapes. Outside of his farming triumphs, he raised a large family of eleven surviving children, served as a trustee for the Red Bank school district, and actively supported local fruit associations.
