Anderson, Fred
Frederick Anderson, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1833, was an influential pioneer of the Scandinavian Colony in Fresno County, California. After learning the cabinet-maker and carpentry trades in his youth, he immigrated to America and initially settled in the San Francisco and San Jose regions. During this period, he married Balbina Folmer, a native of Germany who had arrived in the United States during the historic unrest of 1848. Seeking distinct opportunities in agriculture, he permanently relocated his family to Fresno County in 1879 to pursue a career in farming.
Upon arriving in the region, Anderson purchased sixty acres of land in the Scandinavian Colony and quickly developed it into a highly admired vineyard. He eventually sold forty acres of the property and continued to reside on the remaining acreage until his passing in 1908. His family connection to the area remained strong through his four children, Otto, Emma, Laura, and Ida, who established their own lives within local communities. As a progressive horticulturist and respected community member, his life highlights the vital contributions of early European immigrants to California agricultural development.
