Akers, Wm. Albertus
William A. Akers, born near Austin, Texas, in 1844, was an early pioneer who spent sixty-seven years contributing to the development of Fresno County, California. Arriving in the region with his parents in 1852, he grew up along the Kings River before establishing himself in the local stock-raising industry upon reaching adulthood. His early operations expanded in 1874 when he married Katherine Findley and purchased a ranch in Drumms Valley to continue his work as a stockman. This foundational period marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to developing the agricultural landscape of the region.
In 1880, William transitioned his efforts toward viticulture and horticulture near Centerville, diversifying his agricultural pursuits as the region grew. He later advanced his ranching operations in 1910 by acquiring land on Los Gatos Creek, where he engaged in large-scale cattle raising with his sons, Wade Hampton and George Stoneman. As one of the oldest settlers in the area, he witnessed the dramatic transformation of barren plains into a highly productive agricultural center. His long life and enduring industry reflect the historic experiences of the early pioneers who shaped the foundations of Fresno County.
