Aikin, John W.
John William Aikin, born in Clark County, Iowa, on October 12, 1868, was the son of Relzy Mitchell Aikin and Talitha L. Stansbury. After moving to Nebraska as a child and helping break the virgin soil, he completed a commercial course and taught school before relocating to Selma, California. In Selma, he initially worked in collections and read law, but shifted careers in 1899 to lease and later purchase the Fresno County Enterprise weekly newspaper. As an influential editor, he used his publication to advocate for local temperance reform, facing bitter persecution before witnessing the town vote dry in 1904. He also served public roles as the Selma City Clerk from 1896 to 1900 and as a key promoter for securing the local Carnegie Library.
After a brief real estate venture in Long Beach, Aikin returned to Selma in 1914 and joined the Libby, McNeill and Libby Cannery, eventually rising to become its office manager by October 1915. In his personal life, he married Mary Gertrude Brown in 1897, and the couple raised two children, Viola Leonora and Relzy B. Aikin, while residing in a comfortable home at the corner of Grant and North Streets. Deeply involved in the community, he became a foundational reader for the First Christian Science Society and maintained active charter memberships in both the Woodmen of the World and the Independent Order of Foresters. His professional leadership at the cannery and his steadfast civic dedication through his editorial work solidified his legacy as a prominent citizen who actively shaped the historical and economic landscape of Selma.
