Adoor, Paul
Paul Adoor, born in Assyria in 1872, was a prominent viticulturist who contributed significantly to the agricultural and commercial landscape of Fresno County, California. After learning the baker trade in his homeland, he immigrated to the United States and adapted by mastering the shoemaking trade, working across various factory towns in Massachusetts. He first moved west to California in 1900 to pursue raisin culture with his brother Barsam, though he briefly returned to the East Coast before permanently settling in Fresno in 1908. His life story illustrates the determination of early immigrants who overcame significant handicaps to build successful lives in the American West.
Upon his return to Fresno, Paul partnered with his brother Barsam to run a bakery on the west side of town before pivoting to agricultural investments. In 1913, the brothers purchased a highly successful forty-acre vineyard in the Malaga district, utilizing the rich soil to build a profitable enterprise. His commercial presence expanded further through the joint ownership of the Adoor business block on F Street with his brothers, Barsam and Charles. Naturalized as an American citizen in 1908 and married to Mary Kooyungian in 1912, the father of Elizabeth remains a prime example of the enterprising citizens who shaped California’s early economic history.
