Adams, H. A.
H. A. Adams, born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on January 9, 1867, was a well educated financier and businessman descended from a distinguished Colonial family of English Cavalier stock. The son of a prosperous farmer, James W. Adams, and the grandson of a prominent coal baron and steamboat owner, he spent much of his youth in Missouri before pursuing an extensive higher education. He attended local schools and the state normal school before graduating from the Missouri State University in 1888 with a Ph.D. After completing his studies, he joined his family in California, where he quickly entered the local business sector by managing the Valley Lumber Company in Caruthers for eight years.
While residing in Fresno County, Mr. Adams expanded his professional footprint by marrying Jean Forsyth and establishing a successful general merchandise store that he operated until 1914. He simultaneously became a prominent landowner, purchasing and improving multiple ranches including a large property north of Burrel. Although he briefly relocated to a fine residence in Los Angeles, he returned to his agricultural pursuits in 1918 to support the nation as a food producer during the World War. As a respected community member who raised four surviving children, his life as a merchant, rancher, and patriot firmly connects him to the historical growth and development of Central California.
